ME Hotel London
Rating
The hip ME London hotel on the Strand was designed by star architect Norman Foster, the man behind the Gherkin, Millennium Bridge, and Heathrow’s East Terminal. Design runs through the veins of the 157 guestrooms and 16 suites with a 9-storey atrium in the lobby, displaying an artistic mapping installation every day of the week so there’s always something new to see. The Foster + Partners firm also had their say on the interiors which are suitably monochrome, angular, and futuristic.
It is best known by locals for its 10th floor rooftop Radio Bar with a panorama of the city, taking in sites including Tower Bridge, The Shard, and Big Ben. The bar is so named for being next door to Marconi House, a former BBC building where the first radio broadcast was made in 1922. The terrace is armed with comfy loungers and heaters, but if it gets a little too cold, head inside and swap your sightseeing for people watching.
Read MoreThe Penthouse suite enjoys direct access to the Radio Bar, as well as its own private terrace off the glass-domed living space. It is also equipped with a home cinema.
The STK restaurant is another lively nightspot, offering a smattering of New York trendiness as the only London outpost of the Manhattan favourite. Forgoing the vibe of stuffy, traditional hotel restaurants, it offers a fashionable setting to get your teeth into contemporary American food centred around 28-day custom aged USDA prime beef.
The ME Hotel sits on the former site of the Gaeity Theatre, a popular nightspot from 1864 until 1939. Known for burlesque and music hall, it was a riot of fun, and the hugely popular dancing Gaeity Girls drew in the crowds. The building was demolished in 1956 and the site remained bare until the ME London began development in 2006, turning it into a social centre point for London’s fun-seekers and glamorous jet setters once more.
